Early Spring

Early Spring

The snow is gone and we are moving into spring fishing patterns. I doubt we have seen the last of winter and we sure could use a snow pack, but the extended forecast is looking very mild. The last days of ice fishing have been very productive, but conditions are poor at best on most lakes. The focus of most anglers is Lake Superior and in Marquette the ramps are open! The lower harbor has a lot of people on foot casting for coho and spinners, spoons and especially casting jigs. River fishing is picking up with a few fresh steelhead coming in. I would look for much better fishing in a couple weeks when water temperatures come up. A variety of tactics are working, but an overlooked one is fry patterns. Salmon fry have hatched and will provide a temporary food source and the resident trout and migratory fish are keyed in on them for the time being.

The shop is well stocked with spring inventory arriving daily. We are very excited to be carrying St. Croix fly rods as they have introduced a new lineup. Stop by at take a few casts.
