Winter Update
Winter has officially set in here in the U.P. Inland ice fishing is in full swing. Lake Superior ice fishing is very near.
Walleye and pike reports have been fluctuating with the barometer. Most success is on inland lakes. Tip ups and shiner minnows are the trend for set lines. On the jigging side of things, Northland Buck Shot spoons have been a popular pick, as well as the good ol' Swedish Pimple.
The perch bite started very slowly but in some of our more popular waters we're starting to see better catch rates. Of course there's another Arctic Blast coming that could shut them down. Wigglers on Halis or tungsten rain drop jigs have been the ticket. Rosy Red minnows have seen their fair share of action as well.
We've gotten a few reports from the Munising area. The bay has iced over, and folks have ventured. Ice safety should be your number one concern. Multiple people reported being on 5"+ but within a 15' radius their spud blasted through on the first strike. Once the cold snap sets in for a few days, it should firm up. Those who did get out reported good burbot fishing overnight. Most folks we've talked to are staying near the Anna. No reports from the Keweenaw.
River fishing is good for the time being on the open stretches. If it's not iced over, spend some time on it. Winter browns and steelhead have been reported on wax worms. Pick the warmer days when we have them, and you should find luck.
We've begun our weekly fly tying classes. Free to attend, limited amounts of tools are provided so if you have your own, bring a vise and your tools. We'll have the materials. Tuesday nights at 6:00pm EST
Snow is in the forecast, so the skiing and snowshoe activity should improve.
Popular with out of Towners are the Eben Ice Caves, they should be at their peak for the season. Bring ice cleats, or stop in and grab a pair from us.
Have some fun in the Marquette are this winter. We look forward to seeing you.
